July 19, 2024In the world of decadent desserts, few names resonate as sweetly as Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop. Dreamt up by former firefighter turned baking extraordinaire, Derek Kaplan, this beloved bake shop has spent the last decade tantalizing the taste buds of South Florida with its irresistible confections. What began with a food truck and a dream has grown into a local institution with three thriving storefronts in Wynwood, Coconut Grove, and Fort Lauderdale. Now, Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop is celebrating its first double-digit birthday, marking 10 years of dessert dominance with special events and offerings for loyal fans.
A Sweet Journey
Derek Kaplan’s journey from firefighter to famed baker is nothing short of inspirational. At just 15, Kaplan was squeezing limes by hand to perfect his now-famous Key Lime Pie, Florida’s quintessential dessert. This self-taught baker’s passion for pie soon evolved into a full-fledged business, starting on four wheels before finding a permanent home in Wynwood in 2014. Since then, Fireman Derek’s has become synonymous with dessert excellence, offering over 50 uniquely decadent pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, and even ice cream.
A Milestone Celebration
To commemorate a decade of sweet success, Fireman Derek’s is unveiling a stunning new mural by artist Carlos Solano at its flagship Wynwood location. This vibrant artwork not only celebrates the shop’s milestone but also pays homage to the Wynwood arts community that has supported Kaplan’s journey. “We are so excited to be celebrating 10 years of business here in Wynwood. It’s a tremendous milestone that we will continue to build upon every day. Thank you to all of our customers for believing in our brand and desserts over the years; we are so grateful and can’t wait to celebrate this weekend,” said Kaplan.
Limited-Time Specials
Fireman Derek’s anniversary festivities kick off on Saturday, July 13, and run through Sunday, July 14. Fans can purchase prints of the new mural, signed by both the artist and Derek himself, for $30, with proceeds benefiting a local arts organization. As a thank you, customers who buy a mural print will receive a special Fireman Derek’s Birthday Box, featuring a slice of cake, a slice of pie, and a cookie. This exclusive promotion is available for in-store purchases at the Wynwood location only.
The celebration extends to Fireman Derek’s Coconut Grove and Fort Lauderdale outposts, where nostalgic fans can enjoy a slice of Chocolate Dipped Key Lime Pie on a stick for just $5. This limited-time treat, a throwback to the food truck days, is available while supplies last on July 13 and 14 across all three locations.
