Wynwood: Bunnie Cakes
2322 NE 2nd Avenue, Wynwood
Open for 8 years now, the only vegan, kosher and gluten-free bakery in Miami lives in Wynwood and goes by the name of Bunnie Cakes. This bakery big-shot specializes in cruelty-free, vegan and organic desserts. Just because there is no refined sugar in these cute little cups, doesn’t mean they are any less sweet. Our favorite little bite of joy is the red velvet cupcake. This morsel of happiness is made with vegetable shortening, vanilla, cocoa powder and cane sugar. Instead of the traditional cream cheese icing, they add a dollop of vanilla icing and Bunnie Cakes’ signature candy heart to remind guests that each treat is baked with love.
MiMo: Mi Vida Cafe
7244 Biscayne Boulevard, MiMo
This cozy and health-conscious eatery is making a 5-block move from 7244 Biscayne Blvd to the Midpoint Plaza on 79th street and Biscayne in about two months. Featuring an all-vegan menu, Mi Vida Cafe invites diners into a friendly and relaxed environment. Orange and green walls, wood furnishings and signs discouraging cellphone use surround you as you indulge in the earth’s healthiest offerings. You can watch Chef Daniela La Gamma whip up vegan creations from the open kitchen counter. If you’re adventurous, go for the Sizzling Seitan al Chimichurri ($8.50). For those not familiar with vegan jargon, seitan is wheat gluten. It is so close to the texture and look of meat that even the most adept carnivore could be fooled. Chef La Gamma stays true to her Argentinean roots with this dish, bathing the seitan skewer in a tangy chimichurri sauce. Dip the “meat” in Mi Vida’s homemade hot sauce for an added kick!
Downtown: Cafe at Books & Books
Adrienne Arsht Center, 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Downtown Miami
Mondays outside of Cafe at Books & Books at Adrienne Arsht Center means you can peruse through beautifully ripe seasonal offerings at their Green Market. Later, enjoy a vegetarian dinner by Chef Allen Susser at his communal table. Beginning at 6:30pm, veggie-lovers can indulge in a Farm-To-Table Feast overlooking the farmer’s market. Local produce takes the spotlight as we dine al fresco amid comfortable shady trees. We were lucky enough to experience August’s theme which focused on the flavors of the USA. Chef Allen curated a new menu each week, taking inspiration from a different city. The first week was Napa Valley, followed by New Orleans. We were lucky enough to experience good old Charleston, South Carolina. We truly enjoyed the Southern Bento Box, a fun blend of cultures featuring creamy sweet potato salad, tangy red cole slaw and delightfully crunchy pickled snow peas with a sweet hint of fennel. The amount of flavor in these dishes will make you forget that you are not eating meat. The family style meal comes complete with live music and a one-of-a-kind view of the Downtown Miami area. It is one of the best deals in Miami for $36, including two glasses of wine. Septembers theme was "The Flavors of Seattle." Throughout October, Chef Allen is working with "The Colors of Fall," inspired by the harvest season. This includes heartier vegetables such as squash, zucchini and eggplant. The feasts continue through the end of the year with November's theme "Celebration of Spices" and December's "Celebration of the Holidays Around the World." Call 786-405-1745 to make a reservation.
Little Havana: Choices Kitchen
711 NW 27th Avenue, Little Havana
It’s hard to believe that Little Havana is more than just croquetas and pastelitos. Choices Kitchen, conveniently located by the Miami International Airport, focuses on serving nourishing food, maintaining animal welfare and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Their menu is 100% plant-based and consists of almost all organic ingredients. With three locations in Miami, the Choices philosophy involves combining a peaceful and welcoming space with the best quality cuisine. On our visit, we recommend the signature Chicken Homie ($12). This massive wrap is composed of organic sautéed onions, zucchini, cashew cheese and breaded Chick’n. Please note, we wrote Chick’n, not chicken. Choices’ chick’n is a soy-based meat substitute. It looks like chicken, tastes like chicken and is delicious when bathed in Choices’ chipotle mayo (made in house!). Served in a whole-wheat gluten-free wrap with a lightly dressed side salad, this is the perfect lunch spot for the health-conscious Miamian who does not like to get gypped with small portions.
Coral Gables: Beehive Natural Foods
6490 SW 40th Street, Coral Gables
Visit Beehive Natural Foods on any day during lunch or early dinner and there may not be an open seat in the house. If you’re one of the lucky ones who manage to snag a chair at the wooden food counter, you’ll experience the best of Miami’s vegan delights. Chef Carlos helms the kitchen at this part vegan/vegetarian restaurant and part health food store. Snacks, shakes, desserts and smoothies are made with all-natural ingredients. Tasty organic cuisine takes center stage among delightfully friendly service. Beehive’s bad of loyal customers and new visitors find themselves browsing through aisles upon aisles of homeopathic medicine, vitamins, supplements, honey and organic cosmetics. That is, however, after experiencing a unique veggie-infused meal crafted by Chef Carlos. We suggest you try the Spinach Empanada. This warm pastry is soft, steamy and golden brown. It is perfect for dipping in the soup special of the day. We dipped ours in the creamy Carrot, Zucchini and Basil Soup. Our absolute favorite bite at Beehive is the Baked Tofu Chicharrones. At just $0.75, each chicharron is packed with flavor. Even our pork-loving friends were taken by surprise at just how much these crispy little treats taste like the real deal.
Coral Gables: Beehive Natural Foods
5831 Sunset Drive, South Miami
At just a year old, Temple Kitchen in South Miami offers a completely plant-based menu in a casual and friendly atmosphere. Take a seat in one of their comfortable wooden tables amid abstract multi-colored walls and indulge in their refreshing Puree Power Acai Bowl ($10). This is the ideal snack on a balmy Miami afternoon. Cold Acai berry is blended with banana, apple juice and mint before being topped with fresh bananas, strawberries, grapes, blueberries and granola. The granola is made in-house; it is crunchy and perfectly sweet. Sprinkled with a handful of coconut flakes, this tasty treat gives us energy and antioxidants hidden between nectarous fruity flavor. As an added bonus, Temple Kitchen also serves organic wine priced at $7-$10 by the glass or $22-$39 by the bottle, $5 beer and Bunnie Cakes sweets!
Miami Beach: Jugofresh
40 South Pointe Drive, Miami Beach
Miami's one stop shop for all things healthy goes by the name of Jugofresh. You're probably already aware of this Miami Beach hot spot for being contantly packed with health-food nuts needing their fix of 100% organic, cold-pressed elixirs. Jugofresh's philosophy is simple: "Bring freshness to our community in more ways than one." This entails offering not only a wide selection of juices and nutritious supplements, but fresh salads and bowls of healthful delights as well. Their "Unbelieveabowl (biggie biggie is the illest)" is a refreshing mound of cold raspberry, avocado, almond milk, raw honey, mulberry, blueberry, blackberry, kiwi slices, manuka honey and is topped with bits of cinnamon buckwheat granola before being sprinkled with hemp seeds. This sweet treat contains tocotrienol, an essential nutrient rich in Vitamin E that fuctions as an antioxidant. The best part about Jugofresh? Their food and juices are so tasty and flavorful, you'll forget that you're being health-conscious. Just know that when you're dining or sipping at Jugofresh, you are always going to #eatmadclean.
