Rum is one of the worlds most popular and versatile spirit that forms the foundation for many great cocktails, from mojito’s to piña colada and comes in many different variations including un-aged rums that are typically light, aged rums that pack more flavors, those with a sugar-cane base, spicy rum, tropical or “funky” rum which comes from the Caribbean island of Jamaica and richer styles that can be drunk neat or poured over dessert.

Brugal 1888, hosted an immersive tasting experience at Casa Florida Tuesday evening. Attendees were welcomed with classic cello and violin music as they sipped through various cocktail and food pairing stations, each representative of a different stage in the Brugal 1888 distilling process, to discover the magic behind the distillery-to-cocktail process.

Don Nano’s Favorite

This two-ingredient cocktail is ideal for busy hosts, and for rum lovers, a great way to enjoy the spirit. Pour 50 ml of Brugal 1888 rum over a frozen coconut water ice sphere and serve. The coconut water pairs perfectly with the prominent wood influence in Brugal 1888 to deliver a simple and slightly sweetened serve that is an ideal aperitif.
Negroni Sibarita
- 35 ml Brugal 1888- 15 ml Aperol
- 15 ml Lillet Blanc
- Dash peach bitters
- Garnish: Grapefruit peel
- Method: Stirred
A unique way to celebrate World Rum Day, the Negroni Sibarita is a delicious aperitif best enjoyed outdoors in the sun. Aperol provides a lighter, bitter grapefruit note to this floral take on a traditional Negroni. Angostura 1919 Rum
Angostura 1919 rum is produced in Trinidad by blending a combination of light and heavy molasses distilled rums. These rums spend at least 8 years aging in American oak bourbon barrels.
The name Angostura "1919" refers to the event in 1932 when Angostura's distillery was destroyed by fire. Miraculously, a handful of barrels filled with rum from 1919 survived and were purchased by J.B. Fernandes - the master blender of Fernandes Distillers.
The Angostura 1919 is a nice mixing rum that works very fine in different cocktails and drinks. Angostura is also very approachable for those new to the rum world. It is a great rum to use as a standard benchmark. Featuring beautiful aromas with caramel and chocolate, Angostura is defined by its simple and uncomplicated flavor.
Ron Zacapa 23 Centenario Rum
A blend of rums aged 6-23 years, aged in casks that previously held robust American whiskies and fine wines for a complex and balanced sip. The balance of delicate and unique flavors of Zacapa 23 is derived from a blend of aged rums between 6 and 23 years old, originating from the “Sistema Solera” aging process. Zacapa 23 is aged in selected barrels that previously aged robust American whiskey, delicate sherries and fine Pedro Ximénez wines, creating a smooth & balanced rum. Zacapa 23 Rum is best served neat, on the rocks or in your favorite dark spirit cocktail.
Flor De Cana 25 Year
A sugar-free 25-year old, ultra premium rum that is sustainably produced (Carbon Neutral & Fair Trade certified). From a 5th generation family estate, it is naturally aged without artificial ingredients, distilled 100% with renewable energy and KOSHER certified.
A full-bodied rum with a long and smooth finish that lingers in the palate. Best enjoyed neat or on a rock, and paired with 70% cocoa chocolate. You will find this to be a perfectly balanced mixture of oak, vanilla, caramel, with a hint of smoke, spice and maybe a touch of leather in your glass. Appleton Estate Reserve
Appleton Estate Reserve Rum is a blend of 20 different rums of varying ages, the youngest of which is aged eight years in used Jack Daniels whiskey barrels. This rum is produced in the Nassau Valley of Jamaica on the Appleton Estate from locally sourced sugar cane and limestone-filtered water.
No words can explain Appelton’s fruit forward aromas with nodes of dried apricots, fresh peach and hints of molasses. It will speak directly to your senses.
Mount Gay 1703
Master Blender, Trudiann Branker continues a tradition of hand-select once a year, casks from 10 to 30 years to create 1703 Master Select.
Mount Gay is crafting its rum in Barbados, the birthplace of rum. Barbados has a large influence in the making process: as the only coral based island in the Caribbean, the island offers some of the purest water in the world.
1703 Master Select is an annual limited release of Mount Gay's oldest reserves. This exceptional blend offers rich notes of almonds, toffee, backed figs and salted caramel. 1703 is recognized for its elegance and complexity, delivered in a full body and smooth finish.

Havana Club 15-Year
A masterpiece of Cuban rum-making, Havana Club 15 Year Old is a bold, full-bodied rum with a rich, mahogany color. The palate offers notes of dried fruits, prunes and raisins, alongside spicy oak and rich tobacco. The finish is full of complex vanilla, cocoa and coffee flavors that linger delightfully.
El Dorado 12-Year
El Dorado 12-Year Rum is composed of a blend of aged rums, all at least 12 years old. The rums are distilled using a combination of stills including double wooden pot stills and are aged in bourbon oak casks.
Demerara Distillers of Guyana produces El Dorado 12-year rum and is the country's last remaining distillery, with origins tracing back to 1670. The name ""El Dorado"" references the legendary city of gold that is said to be in the country's Rupununi region. Characterized by notes of dried fruit, vanilla and caramel, the palate reveals notes of exotic fruit and oak.
This is a very good entry level sipper. It's sweetness, spice and smoothness is well balanced best enjoyed with a single ice cube..
Zaya Gran Reserva 12-Year
Zaya Gran Reserva Rum is a blend of rums distilled from molasses in a five column still, the rums are aged in white oak barrels for up to 12 years. Initially distilled by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala in Guatemala. The brand was acquired in 2008 by Infinium Spirits and is now produced in Trinidad and distilled by Angostura.
Zaya is the perfect sipping rum. Each lift of the glass entices you with sweet, nutty, oak aroma’s complimented in every sip by nodes of vanilla and caramel.
